ATV Trails in South Florida

the rider's guide, written by locals who actually ride here

South Florida is one of the most unique places in the country to ride an ATV. Our backyard is the Everglades: thick mud, water crossings, sugar sand flats, and sawgrass as far as you can see. It rides like nowhere else, and it demands respect, the right machine, and people who know the land.

This guide covers what riding here is really like, where you can ride legally, and how to plug into the local riding community. If you own a 4x4 ATV or side-by-side and live in Broward, Miami-Dade, or Palm Beach, this page is for you.

What Makes South Florida Riding Different

Forget hardpack desert trails and rocky mountain climbs. Down here the ground is flat, wet, and alive. A trail that was dusty last month can be bumper-deep water today. That is the whole game: reading terrain that changes with the rain, carrying momentum through mud that wants to swallow your tires, and knowing when to winch instead of throttle.

The payoff is unreal. Sunset water crossings with gators on the bank. Miles of empty sawgrass. A riding season that never ends because winter barely exists. Once you ride the Glades properly, groomed park trails feel like a parking lot.

Where Can You Ride an ATV Legally?

This is the question every new rider asks, and the honest answer is that legal public riding near the coast is limited. The standout option is Big Cypress National Preserve, about 90 minutes west of Miami, with over 400 miles of designated ORV trails across the Bear Island, Turner River, Corn Dance, and Stairsteps units. You need a three-step NPS permit: a free operator permit, a free vehicle inspection sticker, and an annual vehicle permit.

Further afield, Central Florida has bigger systems: the Croom Motorcycle Area in Withlacoochee State Forest and the Ocala National Forest OHV trails. Private mud parks like Redneck Mud Park near Punta Gorda run mudding events. We put together a full breakdown with permit details, rules, and what to expect at each spot:

Why Most Local Riders Join a Club

Here is what nobody tells beginners: the best riding in South Florida is not on a map. It is local knowledge, passed rider to rider. Which trails hold water after rain. Which spots are off-limits. Who has the winch when you bury it to the frame at golden hour.

That is exactly why South Florida Trails exists. We are a free community of 4x4 ATV and SxS riders running weekly group rides across the region, with lead and sweep riders, safety briefings, and a strict ride code. No rider gets left behind, and beginners are welcome as long as the machine is trail-ready.
