SxS & UTV Riding in Florida
side-by-sides were built for this terrainIf you ride a side-by-side in Florida, you picked the right machine for the job. The Everglades is SxS country: long wheelbase for rutted mud trails, a cab that keeps you drier in water crossings, room for a cooler and a passenger, and enough weight to stay planted when the sugar sand tries to skate you sideways.
Most of the South Florida Trails community rides 4x4 ATVs and SxS machines side by side (pun intended). Here is what you need to know to run a UTV down here.
Why SxS Machines Dominate South Florida
Flotation and momentum. Florida mud is thick and bottomless in spots. A SxS carries its weight over a longer footprint, and with the right tires it planes across ruts that swallow smaller machines. Momentum is everything here, and a UTV holds a line better at speed.
Water crossings. Our trails flood. A SxS sits higher, seals better, and lets you read the crossing from the driver's seat instead of standing on pegs guessing. Snorkels are common for a reason.
Group riding. Two seats means your partner, your kid, or your buddy rides along. Half the community vibe happens in the passenger seat.
What Your SxS Needs for Our Trails
Our rides require every machine to be trail-ready, and Florida-ready means a few specifics:
True 4x4. Two-wheel-drive UTVs do not come on our rides. The mud will embarrass you within the first mile, and a stuck machine slows the whole group.
Proper mud tires. Stock all-terrains clog and turn into slicks. Most of our riders run aggressive mud tires; check our mud tire guide for what actually works down here.
Working lights and brakes. We ride into the evening often. You need to see and be seen.
Tow and recovery points. You will get stuck. Everyone does. Front and rear recovery points plus a tow strap or winch are mandatory.
A winch. Not optional in our world. Self-recovery is a skill and a courtesy.
Width Matters: Know Before You Go
Some public riding areas restrict machine width. Croom Motorcycle Area, for example, limits ATVs to 55 inches wide. Full-size SxS machines can exceed trail width limits at certain parks, so always check the rules of wherever you are headed. Our group rides run trails that fit full-size machines.
Where SxS Riders Go in South Florida
The same legal options apply to UTVs as ATVs, with one bonus: Big Cypress National Preserve explicitly permits UTVs on its designated ORV trail system (alongside ATVs, swamp buggies, and airboats), with the same three-step permit process. Note that two-wheeled motorcycles are not allowed in the preserve backcountry, but your SxS is welcome.
For the full breakdown of legal spots, permits, and rules, see our where to ride legally guide. And for weekly group rides with other SxS owners across Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach, that is what our community is for.
Ride With Other SxS Owners
South Florida Trails is free to join. Bring a 4x4 SxS with proper tires and recovery gear, fill out the rider form, and come meet the crew. Lead and sweep riders, safety briefings, and zero tolerance for anyone getting left behind.
